The Cathedral and the Lifeboat
Why the architects of human obsolescence are spending fortunes to put bodies in space. (Installment 2 of 3)
Second in a series. The first essay, The Last Necessity, argued that mass political power has always rested on mass indispensability — that ordinary people held leverage because production and violence genuinely required them, forcing elites to concede rights and wages they would not otherwise have given — and that AI threatens to dissolve that indispensability on every axis at once, leaving human leverage to be manufactured politically through “constructed necessities” rather than supplied automatically by the structure of production. This essay examines the most spectacular candidate for such a construction: the privatized push into space.
I. The puzzle of the body
Start with an inversion so strange that it demands explanation, because the explanation turns out to carry the whole argument.
On every engineering and economic axis, a human being in space is a liability. The body must be kept warm, pressurized, oxygenated, hydrated, fed, shielded from radiation, exercised against bone loss, kept sane in confinement, and — most expensively of all — brought home. Every kilogram of life support displaces a kilogram of payload, and the safety margins that human cargo demands cascade through an entire vehicle’s design, multiplying its cost not incrementally but categorically. The machine suffers none of this. It does not breathe, does not panic, does not need a return ticket, and does not mind a decade of transit or a lethal radiation field. Nearly everything humanity has actually learned about the universe beyond Earth — from the outer planets to the deep field to the surface of Mars — was learned robotically. And the asymmetry is widening, not narrowing: the same artificial intelligence and robotics that are dissolving the necessity of human labor on Earth are even more dominant off it, because vacuum and radiation are hostile to flesh and indifferent to silicon. If the goal is science, machines do it better. If the goal is industry — mining, manufacture, energy — autonomous systems win more decisively in orbit than in any terrestrial factory, and any rational industrialization of space would run for decades before a single settler arrived.
So here is the puzzle. The same men whose terrestrial enterprises are monuments to removing humans from the loop — the automated factory, the autonomous vehicle, the model that writes the code — are spending personal fortunes to insert humans into the most expensive loop ever constructed. The least defensible line item in the entire portfolio of the new gilded age is the crewed program. If these were merely businesses, the astronaut would have been optimized away first.
Which means crewed spaceflight is not fully explained by science or commerce, and something else is being purchased. The question is what.
II. The theory, stated in its strongest form
The theory under examination is this: that the elite push into privatized space travel, exploration, and transport is — collectively, whatever any individual participant believes — the construction of a worldwide necessity, a project large enough for humankind to organize its next phase of social and technical evolution around. In the vocabulary of the previous essay: as the natural necessities that gave ordinary people their leverage dissolve, space is the candidate constructed necessity at species scale. The cathedral for a post-necessity civilization.
Before testing it, strip from it the one feature it doesn’t need and can’t support: coordination. The principals here are rivals, not a cartel, and their eschatologies are incompatible. One vision is settlement — a self-sustaining city on another world as insurance for the species. Another is the Great Inversion — heavy industry moved off-planet, Earth rezoned for residence and restoration, millions living and working in orbital habitats. A third is simply the sale of transcendence to those who can afford the ticket. These programs compete for talent, contracts, launch windows, and narrative. No cabal is required, and none should be inferred.
But the previous essays established the discipline for exactly this situation: outcomes of enormous structural significance do not require coordinated intent, only shared incentives operating on actors with shared inheritances. And what these rivals share is precise. All of them sit atop the machinery that is dissolving human necessity. All of them were formed in the afterglow of Apollo and the long mythology of the frontier. All of them, having accumulated wealth beyond any consumption horizon, face the same question their technologies are forcing on everyone else — what are humans for? — earlier and more acutely than anyone, because they are the first people for whom necessity has already fully dissolved. The strongest version of the theory is therefore not “they conspired to build a necessity” but something more interesting: the dissolution of necessity creates a demand for transcendent projects, and the people with the means are supplying them — each for his own reasons, all from the same vacuum. Convergence without coordination, exactly like the consolidation dynamic itself.
That version survives the conspiracy objection. Whether it survives arithmetic is the next question.
III. The arithmetic that breaks the naive version
If space is to function as a constructed necessity in the load-bearing sense the first essay required — necessity that confers leverage, not merely meaning — then it must need the swarm. Here the historical template is Apollo, and the template is devastating to the hopeful reading once you look at why it worked.
At its peak, Apollo employed roughly four hundred thousand people and consumed more than four percent of the entire federal budget, threading through twenty thousand contractors and universities. It was a genuine mass mobilization that converted national purpose into paychecks, skills, careers, and regional economies — necessity manufactured at continental scale. But Apollo needed four hundred thousand people because 1960s technology needed human beings for everything. The guidance computer’s memory was literally woven by hand, wire by wire, by women whose dexterity no machine could match. Trajectories were checked by rooms of human calculators. Every weld, every test, every drawing passed through human hands because there were no other hands.
A space program of the 2040s will be built by the very machines whose existence created the vacuum the program is supposed to fill. Designed by models, manufactured autonomously, assembled robotically, operated by software — it will be the showcase of post-human production, not the exception to it. The project cannot regenerate mass necessity, because the tools that build it are the tools that dissolved necessity. It will employ tens of thousands where the displacement runs to hundreds of millions. The frontier will be magnificent, and it will be watched on screens.
And a frontier you watch is content. Here the central distinction of the first essay — that meaning and leverage, fused throughout history, can now come apart — returns with full force. Space may supply the species with meaning in abundance: a shared story, a direction, a sky-cathedral, the oldest transcendence there is. It will supply the swarm with no bargaining power whatsoever. A civilization can be enraptured and powerless simultaneously; indeed, from the standpoint of those who own the rockets, rapture is considerably cheaper than wages. The naive version of the theory — space as the project that re-necessitates humanity — fails on this arithmetic. What survives is something that must be read much more carefully, because it has a sinister face and a hopeful face, and they belong to the same head.
IV. The sinister readings
There are three, in ascending order of seriousness.
The lifeboat. Albert Hirschman taught that members of any system choose between exit and voice — between leaving and staying to repair — and that the credibility of exit silently determines the investment in voice. An elite that believes it has somewhere else to go underinvests in fixing the shared world; this is the oldest pattern in political economy, from capital flight to the gated enclave, and space is its asymptotic case. Note carefully that the lifeboat does not need to be seaworthy to do its damage. As physical escape, a Mars settlement is close to worthless for generations — dependent on Earth for everything that matters, and unable to outrun the most serious existential risks, since a misaligned superintelligence boards the lifeboat with you, riding in the colony’s own software. But the belief in exit reshapes behavior now, decades before any exit exists. The psychology of the lifeboat operates at full strength even when the physics is fantasy.
The theodicy. Monumental projects have always done double duty as legitimation. The pyramid organized Egypt; the cathedral organized the medieval town; and both converted staggering concentrations of surplus into structures that made the concentration feel cosmically warranted. “We must gather the resources of the species because the destiny of the species demands it” is a sentence that launders present inequality through future transcendence — a theodicy of concentration, in which the suffering of the displaced is redeemed by the magnificence of the destination. Notice that this reading and the hopeful one are not different projects. They are the same project read from above or from below, which is precisely what made cathedrals so durable as instruments of power: the legitimation was sincere, and the transcendence was real, and neither canceled the other.
The high ground. The most concrete reading is also the least romantic. By most accounts, the revenue core of the commercial space industry is not the astronaut at all — it is the uncrewed and resolutely terrestrial business of communications constellations, surveillance, and defense launch. The crewed program is the narrative engine: the astronaut is the marketing department for the infrastructure. And that infrastructure is not an alternative to the consolidation stack described in the first essay. It is the stack’s next layer — the literal high ground of all three classical instruments at once. Connectivity becomes a privately controlled utility on which populations and even states depend: resource access. The carrier of the world’s bandwidth shapes what the world can say and verify: belief, and the verification commons. And the orbital layer is increasingly inseparable from military targeting, reconnaissance, and command: coercion. The world has already watched a private individual’s infrastructure decisions shape the battlefield of an active war. Meanwhile the legal regime overhead is a vacuum by design — a treaty from 1967 that bars nations from appropriating celestial territory while saying almost nothing enforceable about what private actors may claim, extract, or control, an ambiguity that recent national legislation has begun resolving unilaterally in favor of the claimants. On this reading, the romance of bodies in space is the legitimacy shell around the most consequential consolidation of all: the extension of the control stack to the one position from which every point on Earth is downhill.
V. The hopeful reading — and the real answer to the puzzle of the body
Now return to the inversion we began with, because the hopeful reading resolves it, and the resolution is the most clarifying single idea in this essay.
The preference for crewed spaceflight is irrational only if the mission is science or industry. It is perfectly rational if the mission is presence. You cannot robotically perform “humanity becomes a multiplanetary species.” There is no autonomous system that can be born somewhere, raise children somewhere, die somewhere, and thereby make a place human. For settlement — as opposed to study or extraction — the human is not the means of the mission. The human is the deliverable. The engineering absurdity of the body in space is not a flaw in the project; it is the signature of what kind of project it is.
And this is the moment to notice something that rescues and transforms the original theory. The first essay defined a constructed necessity as a function deliberately reserved for humans even though a machine could perform it better — the human judge retained though the model could rule faster, the human hand kept on decisions that bind. Constructed necessities are always engineering absurdities. The inefficiency is the content; the reservation of the role for a person is the entire point. Crewed spaceflight, on this reading, is the purest constructed necessity ever attempted: a civilization choosing to do something the hard, fleshly, expensive way precisely because doing it any other way would make it not worth doing. The puzzle of the body is answered, and the answer vindicates the instinct behind the theory — these projects really are constructions of human necessity in a world that no longer supplies it naturally. The question the arithmetic of Part III forces is narrower and harder: a constructed necessity for whom?
Because here the hopeful reading has real, unsentimental content, and it is conditional. Space cannot be a constructed necessity that employs the swarm — the arithmetic forbids it. But it could be one that includes and organizes the swarm, if and only if participation is made real rather than symbolic. The American frontier functioned as the safety valve of nineteenth-century class conflict — to whatever degree it did — not because it existed but because the Homestead Act let ordinary people claim it; and it is no coincidence that the census declared the frontier closed at the threshold of the most violent labor decade in the nation’s history. A frontier without a homestead act is scenery. The hopeful version of the space project therefore has identifiable load-bearing requirements: ownership of orbital infrastructure held broadly — by publics, by funds in which citizens hold enforceable stakes — rather than by a handful of founders; the collapsing cost of launch converted into breadth of access rather than depth of enclave; governance of the orbital commons built plurally, by treaty and institution, rather than settled by fait accompli; and a human program that widens its aperture — training pipelines, selection breadth, citizen pathways — even while its headcount stays small, so that the project’s necessity is distributed even where its employment cannot be. The cathedral, remember, was both an instrument of hierarchy and the genuine common possession of the town that raised it across five generations of masons and carters and glaziers who were buried in its shadow. The duality is not a confusion in the theory. It is the permanent nature of monumental projects, and which face dominates is decided not by the monument but by the institutions around it.
VI. Verdict, and how to tell which world we’re in
So: the pet theory, judged honestly.
As a claim about coordinated intent, it fails. The actors are rivals; their eschatologies conflict; and their behavior is fully explained without it — by status competition at the only altitude left to compete at, by sincere personal cosmologies, by state contracts and prestige rivalry with a rising power whose own crewed lunar ambitions are explicit, and by the revenue logic of orbital infrastructure for which the astronaut is the story that sells the stack.
As a claim about function, it half-survives, and the surviving half is sharper than the original. Space is genuinely the leading candidate for the species-scale constructed project that the post-necessity vacuum demands, and the puzzle of the body — far from being the theory’s weak point — is its strongest evidence, because the deliberate reservation of a role for expensive, inefficient, irreplaceable human presence is exactly what a constructed necessity looks like. But the first essay’s central distinction now does its work: what is being constructed, so far, is purpose, not necessity. Necessity confers leverage. Purpose, by itself, confers only meaning — and meaning without leverage is the upholstery of the gilded cage. The sinister and hopeful readings of the space project are not competing theories between which we must choose; they are the two faces every cathedral has worn, and the face that dominates will be determined by structures of ownership and governance that are being poured, like foundations, right now.
Which yields the observables — the tells that will distinguish, within a decade or two, which project we are actually watching. Watch whether ownership of the orbital layer broadens or narrows. Watch whether the falling cost of access becomes breadth of access or merely depth of enclave. Watch whether the legal vacuum overhead is filled by plural treaty-making or by a claims race ratified after the fact. Watch whether the crewed program widens human participation or hardens into spectacle plus a manifest of the wealthy. And watch the single sharpest tell, the one that ties this essay back to its predecessor: whether any of the necessity being constructed up there is owned by the swarm as an enforceable right, or merely promised to it as a story.
The question this leaves for the next essay is the one the arithmetic forces. If the grandest project available can construct purpose but not mass necessity — if no frontier, however vast, can re-necessitate a species whose tools have outgrown it — then perhaps purpose and leverage must now be engineered separately, by different institutions, and the deepest mistake is asking one frontier to do both jobs. What, then, could do the second one? The candidates are quieter than rockets: the care of persons, the maintenance of the world, the local knowledge that may yet prove irreducible, the ownership structures that turn dividends into rights. The sky may be where a post-necessity civilization points its meaning. Where it anchors its power will be decided on the ground.
